Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas—very holy places in Hinduism. It is dedicated to Goddess Kali, the goddess of power. According to legend, when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava with Goddess Sati’s body, the toe of her right foot fell here, which is why Kalighat is so special.
Inside the main shrine is a powerful idol of Goddess Kali. In it, Kali is shown standing on Lord Shiva’s chest.
She wears a garland of skulls, holds an axe and severed heads, and has skulls tied around her waist. Her tongue sticks out and is made of gold. The present temple was built with support from the Saborno Roy Choudhury family and Babu Kali Prasad Datto. Construction started in 1798 and finished in 1809.
