Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas—very holy places in Hinduism. It is dedicated to Goddess Kali, the goddess of power. According to legend, when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava with Goddess Sati’s body, the toe of her right foot fell here, which is why Kalighat is so special.

Inside the main shrine is a powerful idol of Goddess Kali. In it, Kali is shown standing on Lord Shiva’s chest.

She wears a garland of skulls, holds an axe and severed heads, and has skulls tied around her waist. Her tongue sticks out and is made of gold. The present temple was built with support from the Saborno Roy Choudhury family and Babu Kali Prasad Datto. Construction started in 1798 and finished in 1809. Kalighat Temple is both a religious and cultural landmark. For centuries, people from India and abroad have come here to pray for courage, protection, peace, prosperity, and success. Major festivals like Durga Puja and Kali Puja are celebrated with great devotion, making the temple an important symbol of Bengal’s heritage.

Puja Benefits

To achieve fearlessness

Worshiping Goddess Kali on this powerful night of the new moon dispels fear and insecurity. Her grace instills courage and self-confidence.

For mental stability and peace

Through this Mahanisha Puja, the grace of Goddess Kali dispels confusion and stress from the mind. This puja calms the mind and provides concentration and spiritual balance.

To remove obstacles to prosperity and success

Goddess Kali is considered the destroyer of darkness and negativity. Worshiping her on this auspicious day removes obstacles to wealth and success.

On this night of power and light of Diwali, with the blessings of Maa Dakshina Kali, remove all your fears and apprehensions and take a step towards mental stability and self-confidence. According to the Vedic calendar, the night of Kartik Amavasya, or Diwali, is considered extremely auspicious and spiritually powerful. When the Sun, symbolizing the soul, and the Moon, symbolizing the mind, come together, this union marks a time of balance between the soul and mind. At this time, it is easier for a person to let go of their inner fears and illusions.

This Amavasya night is when Shakti manifests in her highest form and dispels all darkness. The scriptures consider the Nishit Kaal of Diwali to be extremely important. Meditation during this time is believed to enhance mental stability, fearlessness, and spiritual strength. Worshiping Goddess Dakshina Kali on this sacred night holds special significance. Goddess Kali is the form of Shakti that destroys fear, negativity, and obstacles. When the entire universe is illuminated by lamps, worshipping Goddess Kali amidst the natural darkness burns away deep-seated fears and negative emotions, bestowing spiritual peace and courage. The story of the demon Raktabeej symbolizes this. When each drop of Raktabeej's blood gave birth to a new form, the gods became disheartened. At that very moment, Mother Kali appeared from the third eye of Goddess Durga. With her powerful form, she swallowed every drop of Raktabeej and destroyed him. This story shows that Mother Kali destroys the fear, instability, and negative thoughts within us, transforming them into strength and self-confidence.

This Mahanisha Puja, held at the Kalighat Shaktipeeth in Kolkata, involves worshipping Mother Dakshina Kali through special hymn recitations and havans. It is believed that this puja, performed at midnight on Diwali, provides relief from fear and negative influences, and bestows stability, peace, and divine protection. This special puja, performed through the Sri Mandir, invokes the blessings of fearlessness, mental balance, and spiritual strength in your life.
